What you Need to Know About this week’s Nutrena Feed Recall: DON’T PANIC

Cargill Nutrena has issued a very LIMITED, voluntary recall of 2 specific poultry feed products this week, NatureWise Meatbird 22% crumble and NatureWise unmedicated Chick Starter Grower 18% crumbles, which were manufactured in the following facilities: Flora, Illinions, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Abilene, Texas and Mineola Texas between May 1, 2013 and November 21, 2013. To find out what it means to YOU, I reached out to my peeps at Nutrena for more information than contained in the recall notice, which is printed in its entirety, below.

We were just discussing how to prepare for a feed recall on my Facebook page 4 days ago and the importance of saving feed bag tags, however, this particular recall applies to feed that may have been fed to chicks as long as six months ago, so I wanted to know what the possible impact of the recall could be or could have been on chicks that consumed the feed.
Poultry nutritionist, Dr. Roy Johnson, PhD at Cargill spoke with me at length, answering all of my questions. The recalled feeds contained a little bit less calcium than the company guarantees on the label, which is between .8 and 1.3%. Chicks do need some calcium and the chicks that ate the affected feed got some calcium. My understanding is that there is a little bit of wiggle room built into the calcium percentage range, therefore, pet chicks who consumed the affected feeds exclusively are not expected to be affected.  IF there were to be any problems at all, it would be in the form of barely detectable leg abnormalities: slightly shorter legs or bowed legs. There have been no reports from backyard chicken keepers of any developmental concerns to date, which is consistent with Dr. Johnson’s expectations.
I am not the least bit worried about our backyard chickens as a result of this recall. Should you have any questions or concerns, the company encourages you to contact them toll-free at 1-888-321-8586.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Minneapolis, Minn., November 27, 2013 – Cargill’s animal nutrition business today announced a voluntary recall of two of its Nutrena NatureWise poultry feeds due to incorrect levels of calcium. The affected products were manufactured at Cargill’s facilities in Flora, Ill., Oklahoma City, Okla., Abilene, Texas, and Mineola, Texas, between May 1, 2013 and Nov. 21, 2013.

Products were sold under the name NatureWise Meatbird 22% Crumble with the following product codes: 91585-40; and lot code range: FL3121–FL3325. The product was sold in 40 lb. bags. The second product is NatureWise Chick Starter Grower 18% Crumble with the following product codes: 91577 and 91577-40 and lot code range: FL3121–FL3325, AT3121–AT3325, MN3121–MN3325 and OC3121–OC3325. Calcium is an essential nutrient for poultry. Decreased levels of calcium in diets for meatbirds and starter chicks may lead to reduced bone growth and other bone health issues. Customers should call their veterinarian if their animals have experienced adverse health effects while consuming the affected product.

Customers should return remaining products to their local dealer or retailer for a full refund or replacement. For more information, including photos of products involved, visit our website at www.cargill.com/feed/poultry-feed-recall, or call 888-321-8586.
