The Chicken Chick®: January 2015

Flock Focus Friday, 1/30/15

We have been getting hammered with frigid temps and snow storms here in New England, including a certified blizzard last week and are now staring down the barrel of another couple of feet of snow tomorrow night!
The Blizzard of 2015
Looking back at my photos from January I can't believe how nutty it was: Doc Brown came down with a mystery illness that had me looking at her back for several days to determine whether she was still breathing. After days of hand feeding and prayer, she miraculously recovered. Blaze & Chevy got hit with frostbite which put them out of commission and in the basement Mancave where they remain with Doc until temperatures warm up. Mr. Chicken Chick and I had whirlwind weekend at the Northeastern Poultry Congress meeting so many of my amazing peeps, followed days later by a scheduled surgery that put me out of commission for a bit. Finally, we have been getting hammered with frigid temps and snow storms here in New England, including a certified blizzard last week and are now staring down the barrel of another couple of feet of snow tomorrow night! Whew! I'm exhausted just thinking about it all. I'm very much looking forward to a mostly boring February, please!

Unicorn Poop Cookies

Unicorn Poop Cookies Tutorial
My baby girl turns seven years old today and I was fully expecting to create pretty princess or fairy-themed cupcakes for her to share with her classmates. She, however, had other ideas in mind: Unicorn Poop Cookies. <sigh> I had never heard of Unicorn Poop Cookies, but my two daughters reveled in describing them to me, giggling all the while. I used my tried-and-true lemon sugar cookie recipe and punted the rest of the way based on their instructions.

Chicken Sweaters: Just Say No

While it's fine to engage in a little silliness with our chickens from time-to-time, sweaters are not only unnecessary, they can be dangerous.
Dressing pet chickens in sweaters has become something of a fad in backyards recently, a trend not entirely different from the pet rock of the 1970s- silly, cute and unnecessary. Photos of hens wearing sweaters are being shared on social media channels like the common cold in a kindergarten class, photos that no doubt fuel a practice that ought not be encouraged. The average chicken does NOT NEED a sweater. I am first in line to encourage the proper care and keeping of pet chickens and can anthropomorphize my pets with the best of 'em, but the truth is, sweaters do not help backyard chickens and if I believed they did, I would use them and advocate their use. While it's fine to engage in a little silliness with our chickens from time-to-time for a quick photo op, sweaters are not only unnecessary, they can be dangerous.

The Complete Chick Care Guide

Baby chicks will be filling feed store bins and arriving in post offices around the country soon, so I have rounded up some tools to help the new chicken keeper with chicken breed selection, chick housing options, feeding questions and trouble-shooting problems common in baby chicks. If you are new to the chicken adventure, welcome! If you're an ol' pro, you still might find a few tips that will help you keep your chicks healthier and happier and keep your family safe while doing so.
