Flock Focus Friday, 8/15/14

Blaze, my Black Copper Marans rooster
This installment of Flock Focus Friday is brought to you on Tuesday because after announcing on my Facebook page that my town is suing me for the removal of my chickens, the media got wind of it and have been bogged down with interviews and inquiries ever since. While I am happy to finally get the word out, it has been a time drain.
Here's the scoop in case you missed it on Facebook last week:
My town has sued me for the removal of chickens from my backyard & while I am confident in my legal strategy, this 5 year battle fueled by my neighbor has become extremely costly. If I have helped you keep chickens or given you a reason to smile on occasion, please consider a donation of any size to "Operation Home to Roost." Without my chickens I would have no blog or Facebook page & could not continue to bring you the experiences, photos, information & chicken-related entertainment you have become accustomed to seeing from me.

If you would like to help me wage the battle for the right to keep my chickens, a donation of any size would help. Rachel, Blaze & I thank you in advance for your support in any form!
To donate through PayPal, please click on this link or click on the Rachel/Blaze photo with the "Donate" button on it in the right-hand sidebar of my blog.
Questions about the character of my yard, neighborhood and town are answered with this link to Google Street Maps where You can see my property, (it has the kids' white playhouse/swingset in the backyard) the complaining neighbor's house to the right of it and drive around town to check out all the farms, horses and chickens!
The argument I made to my town's zoning commission can be seen and heard in this YouTube video.
I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.
We have been enjoying spectacular weather this week, interrupted only briefly by a few passing rain showers. The eagerly awaited  dahlias, gladiolas and zinnias are in full bloom at the farm up the street and I stop whenever possible to purchase a dozen. I hope you enjoy the photos from last week!

Participation in Mondays should be optional
Really, Mother Nature? REALLY?!
Guess what day it is?
Some days you make the coffee, some days the coffee makes you.
Is it Friday yet?
Dear Monday, you had better thank coffee for its existence.
It has been one of those days.
Coffee has given me unrealistic expectations of productivity.
My soul? I sold it to make more room for coffee.

Thanks for visiting and have a great week!

That sucks about the issues with your neighbor. Our flock likes to venture to you neighbors yard daily, but so far we haven't had too many issues about it. Good luck and stay positive!

I am praying for great success in keeping your chickens....how cruel can a neighbor be? I wish I could have heard your plea, but my sound is as loud as it will go. HOWEVER, I have approx. 110 laying hen, give or take. I cannot let them free range due to coyotes, foxes and dogs, but they have large pens and seem to be very happy. We sell eggs for extra income but with the price of feed we probably don't break even. I just enjoy them so much. I could certainly use a chicken fountain and they would love it. They currently drink from buckets....that I have to keep clean and change water often. I love your blog and have learned so much from it. What would we do without you?

I would LOVE to have this watering system! Please Please Please?!?! :D I keep bugging my husband to make me one of these as I am not handy but have yet to get one. I am also so happy to have found you now that I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 7 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Plymouth Rocks, 2 Buff Orpington Roosters and 5 Cochins in our backyard. We have to fill the water up twice a day and could use the help. My 3 year old daughter and I look at your site and pictures all the time. Good luck with your annoying neighbors, our donation from my family is on its way.

Thank you for all that you do! I've learned so much from your blogs. I just started raising my chicks this spring. I too live in an area that I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before a neighbor complains about my girls. I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge I've gained, the entertainment you've brought to my life and for bringing awareness that we should be allowed to have backyard chickens as pets! Thank you so much! Best wishes to you!

I truly hope you win the war! Chickens are but one way we can increase our own sustainability and eat healthy. Sounds like your neighbor hasn't had the pleasure of farm fresh eggs or free-range food. Maybe he or she might cluck another tune if a nice farm-fresh omelet was offered? Best of luck!

Your neighbor doesn't even look that close--mine neither. In my old neighborhood where we were close together, no one bothered anyone! Go figure!

Oh my....you live in a beautiful place....nice countryside...where CHICKENS SHOULD BE IN EVERY backyard! In Greenville, SC the city even allows hens....your neighbor needs to go to a gated neighborhood or a condo....all around you have some lovely neighbors and if they aren't careful this neighbor will be having them remove their horses, too. I was most impressed with his 'lovely' (argh) outbuilding at his drive... Prayers that commonsense will prevail!
Thanks for all your offerings and advice and info...you've been a Godsend!

  109. Would love one of these so I don't have to fill waters all the time! And I don't understand how your town can go from wanting to make backyard chickens legal to actually sueing you for removal of your chickens! Also I feel (for what it's worth) that if your property is measured in acres and not square feet then it should be no questions asked! Especially when horses are allowed!

I absolutely cannot believe that 'neighbor' is actually giving you a hard time! The whole neighborhood is beautiful & well taken care of.... I still believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt - but since this has been going on 5+ years - it is totally ridiculous! If I was so unhappy - I'd move, not the other way around! Anyway - I wish you the best of luck & your excellent attorney skills :)- and may justice prevail....

Best of luck in your battle. My husband and I had to go up against zoning due to a nosy neighbor. Turns out she complained because she thought the chickens belonged to someone else and was only doing it to be spiteful anyway. Our hens are currently residing in a grey area of the zoning regs, open to the interpretation of a chicken friendly officer.

Good luck with your chicken vs neighbor problem. I can't understand people who have nothing better to do than look for reasons to be negative and come up with ways to destroy someone else's happiness. I am praying for a speedy victory for you and your coop!! You have taught me so much . God bless you

As of last weekend, our neighbor came over to introduce himself and to complain about our rooster waking him up at 5 am every morning. We don't want any trouble so for now we have decided to put both of them in a dog crate in the garage at night till I leave around 7:30...Hope this suffices for now although he will crow during the day. Sorry for your troubles.

I hope you win your case! Your property is so
cute and clean looking. Sorry you have a grumpy pants neighbor L We started our flock in May and your blog has been
invaluable for helping us get everything set up for the girls. We have two buff
Orpingtons (Beatrice and Roberta), one Black Australorp (Nox) and two Ameraucanas
(Jean Grey and River Song). They are now about 20ish weeks, looking forward
    to finding an egg soon!

  159. I tried using the PayPal link but it wouldn't work for me - I don't know if it's on my end or yours. Anyway, since I have your address I am sending money in the mail. I can't afford much, but the information you have given to me over this past year has been priceless, so I want to help. I will be sending a testimonial letter also, about how much help you have been to me in the past. Maybe if a lot of people send letters, it might help?!
