Flock Focus Friday, 8/1/14 Featuring a Chubby Mealworms GIVEAWAY!

Blue Splash Marans hen
Don't be fooled by the innocent face- Windy was caught red handed with a face full of raw egg in a nest box today. Just when I thought I'd gotten the egg-eaters under control...back I go to the drawing board! Egg eating aside, the other two significant events in the backyard lately are broody hens and many molting chickens. 'Tis the season!

  18. I noticed you have multiple roosters. Do you have trouble with them fighting with each other? I have two and the younger one almost killed the older one this week. I'm trying to find a home for the abuser but I'm finding it hard to give a rooster away. Any suggestions?

I need to win badly. My 2 year old Black Australorp "Betty" was sitting on the ground a week ago in front of the food table my husband made for the girls so they wouldn't have to bend down all the time. That was strange to me so I walked over to her and instead of getting up immediately and dashing away, Betty couldn't move. When I picked her up and set her down one leg went straight out in front and the other in back and she fell over. I thought it was Merrick's disease. The following two days she continued to fall over and has no use of either leg. She also fell asleep during the two times a day I would place her in a separate yard by herself as if exhausted and had no desire to peck the ground. I bought a bag of mealworms, everyone's favorite, and I research all the possible causes for this. In addition to Merrick's disease, my Betty could be suffering a Vitamin B2 deficiency or perhaps she was injured in a leg or hip as I had seen her limping several weeks ago, read your article on Bumblefoot and purchased all the necessary items you listed to perform that surgery. Well, Betty's foot is totally fine and now I was at a loss. Put a dog crate in the coop with a food and water bowl attached to the wire so she could easily reach. I then scraped together some cash having just bought an entire first aid kit for Bumblefoot, and bought a small bag of mealworms just for Betty. I then purchased kale, spinach, broccoli, carrots, yams to juice. I had always given them the juice pulp but now I wanted to give Betty the juice too. Whatever the cause, I knew she was going to need to supercharge her nutrient intake to heal. The mealworms were a topper for every dish of food, all the scrambled eggs, all the veggie pulp and then I dropped them into the juice to get her to drink and it worked. Yesterday I ran out of mealworms but put a bowl of carrot juice in front of Betty and she had her entire face in that juice - her beak, her wattles and nostrils. She has enjoyed carrot and yam juice, just plain carrot juice, kale juice and spinach juice. Today, during Betty's alone time in the yard by our deck, she stood up tall and held it for several minutes. I could see her from the kitchen and immediately went out to celebrate with her. I filmed her for several minutes on my IPhone so my husband can see when he gets home. He's the "worm guy" and digs up real worms every afternoon and they adore him. We have pumped more food, juice and mealworms into Betty in one week than she's had in her entire 2 years and now I am out of mealworms. Here's to hoping Betty wins this 2 pound bag so she can run, scratch, peck and fly across the yard with her sisters. Finger's crossed for my Betty.
