Koop Clean: a Fresh, New Chicken Bedding from Lucerne Farms

Koop Clean is an all natural chicken bedding comprised of chopped hay, chopped straw and a unique, odor-neutralizing ingredient called Sweet PDZ. Contains no chemicals, dyes or perfumes.
I am delighted to introduce you to my new sponsor, Lucerne Farms and their fresh, innovative bedding product, Koop Clean®! Founded in 1989 by George A. James, Lucerne Farms is a small, family-owned company in Maine that has been producing equine forage products ever since. Lucerne Farms crossed over into the backyard chicken-keeping world recently and I was contacted by its president, Rich James, the founder's son, about test-driving their new chicken bedding, Koop Clean™.

After a visit to the Koop Clean and Lucerne Farms websites, I had a lot of questions about the product's components and claimed benefits that I needed answered before I would even let them send me a bag. Rich wasted no time providing me with the answers and research I asked for and after having read the literature and used Koop Clean in my brooder and nest boxes, it is my pleasure to recommend Koop Clean to you!

FACTS ABOUT KOOP CLEAN

· Koop Clean is an all natural chicken bedding comprised of chopped hay, chopped straw and a unique, odor-neutralizing ingredient called Sweet PDZ, which contains no chemicals, dyes or perfumes.
· Sweet PDZ (zeolite) is a naturally-occurring mineral created from volcanic activity, which captures, neutralizes and eliminates harmful ammonia and odors.

· The hay and straw are heat-treated, which kills mold spores and weed seeds.
· The hay and straw in Koop Clean are cut short, which maximizes absorbency and hastens decomposition of spent bedding in compost vs. straw alone.

· Sweet PDZ can absorb approximately 40-50% of its weight in moisture.
· Sweet PDZ acts as natural grit in digestion.
· Sweet PDZ acts as a compost enhancement and slow-release fertilizer in gardens. Here’s the chemistry of how it does that: ammonia gas molecules stick to the surface of the Sweet PDZ granule and when the granule dries out, the ammonia molecule is driven off the surface of the granule as nitrogen, creating bomb-diggity fertilizer!
Chickens working the compost pile. When they eat the zeolite in the Koop Clean, their droppings are drier and smell less!
· 2.4 cubic feet of bedding per bag, (approximately 30 lbs) which covers 63 square feet when spread at a depth of two inches.
· When consumed by chickens, the droppings are drier and smell less.
Koop Clean has a delightful, fresh cut hay scent that remains fresh-smelling for a long time.
My baby chicks LOVE playing in their Koop Clean!
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT  KOOP CLEAN
*Lucerne Farms is a family owned and operated in Maine.
* Koop Clean has a delightful, fresh cut hay scent that remains fresh-smelling for a long time.
* The heat drying process eliminates harmful mold spores that ordinary, sun-dried straw can harbor.
* Ammonia gases bind to the Sweet PDZ, creating a healthier environment for chickens’ respiratory systems.
* Absorbs moisture, which reduces the risk of coccidiosis in brooders and in coops during warm weather.
*Reduces the fly population by reducing wetness and odor.
* Boredom Buster: my chickens love scratching through it! The down-side of that can be that they can kick it into feeders and traditional waterers, however, using poultry nipple drinkers and raised/hanging feeders solves that issue.
My chickens love scratching through Koop Clean!
Poultry nipple waterers keep water bedding-free and poop-free!
Instructions for this brooder feeder can be found HERE.

* Natural, degrades faster than straw or pine shavings in compost pile.
*Enhances compost & increases nutrient value of chicken manure and in turn, improves garden soil.
*Used in nesting boxes, facilitates clean-up from broken eggs and unauthorized use of nest boxes as out-houses.
Shell-free eggs and eggs broken from egg-eating chickens make a nasty mess in nest boxes, Koop Clean faciliates clean-up.

* 100% natural, non-toxic, biodegradable and renewable!
* Softer than hay, straw and pine shavings.
* Less dusty than pine shavings.
* A little goes a long way.
KOOP CLEAN vs PINE SHAVINGS
After using Koop Clean in my brooder, I found I changed the bedding half as often as pine shavings, so while the comparative cost per bag is approximately double that of pine shavings, I used half as much and found that it performs in ways pine shavings cannot.
Koop Clean is much more effective than pine shavings at keeping the brooder dry, but the most striking difference is its ability to control odors.
Koop Clean is much more effective than pine shavings at keeping the brooder dry, but the most striking difference is its ability to control odors. I have a brooder in my office (where you know I spend a lot of time!) and even after five days my office still smelled like a freshly cut hay field!

WHERE TO FIND KOOP CLEAN
Koop Clean can be found in locally owned feed stores, hardware stores and garden centers. Since it is a very new product, distribution is currently limited, but if you email Lucerne Farms with your zip code and the name of your favorite independent garden center or hardware store, they will work to get the product into a store near you! 105. Shredded straw and Sweet PDZ have been a staple in my barn for moisture and odor control all along. Love it in the chicken coop as well. Also, the shredded straw/poo mixture composts better and tills into garden soil better. This product - adding the two together with hay and heat treating to kill seeds is a wonderful idea. I hope to see it in stores near me soon!

  122. i have a few questions about this product... probably some of the same you had... i have used several of the lucerne farms products (love them by the way) for my horses over the years and use Sweet PDZ (firm beliver in it) also for my horses.
1)The Sweet PDZ on its own is very dusty- i am very cautious about putting down in a very airy stall when my horses are in. With the KoopClean, is it dusty? If it is not, how have they overcome this issue? i saw that each bag is 'dust extracted'?
2)Is it an issue if the chickens eat the KoopClean?
3)how does this compare to having sand (which you have endorsed in the past) in your coop?
4)what about mites/ lice being able to live in the KoopClean?

What a great alternative to hay or wood chips. Perhaps sand on the ground and this in the coop!

I have been using pine shavings I'm my brooder. I wanted to use sand but had a hard time finding a good local source that didn't have additives like silica in it. This looks very promising as my new favorite choice and will be looking into how to find it here in Florida! Thank you for test driving the products so we can have an honest opinion of them.

  157. This stuff sounds amazing! A drier, cleaner, better smelling chicken coop is what everyone wants - especially the chickens! And the fact that they can eat the mineral, have less smelly poop, and the mineral releases nitrogen into the compost - wow, what more could you ask for! I would love to win a bag of this stuff - thanks for the opportunity!
