Flock Focus Friday, featuring an invitation to P. Allen Smith's Garden Home Retreat

Kathy Shea Mormino, The Chicken Chick with P. Allen Smith and some of his heritage breed chickens
The trip of a lifetime to Little Rock Arkansas combined with a most inconvenient stomach flu 24 hours prior to my flight meant that I didn't have time to prepare a Flock Focus Friday for you last week- you'll forgive me though, right? I was invited to attend P. Allen Smith's Garden Home Retreat to be the guest reporter for him at his Poultry Workshop, which was an honor indeed! I knew that I would be filming television and radio segments with Allen the day before the workshop, but I didn't realize that I was going to be the only chicken blogger/writer in attendance that weekend- holy pressure, Batman! I had the time of my life and can't wait to share the scoop with you. I have been catching up on work and fielding new offers and opportunities all week, but I promise to share more details about my trip very soon!

These hatching eggs were gifts from P. Allen Smith from his heritage breed pens.
Back to the coal mines on Monday. ☺ The torrential rain created flooding in many parts of Connecticut, including my chicken yard.
My chicken compound in Connecticut was a flooded mess this week
The rain and flooding was just the start of the weather fun this week as Mother Nature reminded us how quickly things can change in New England in April. Snow. Seriously?!
We no sooner bailed the water out of the chicken run than it began to snow.
What a difference a day makes! The snow quickly melted the next day and Caesar stood guard over the backyard while Mr. Chicken Chick built some new droppings boards for the coops!

Important reminder:
I am a lifetime commitment, I am NOT a basket filler. I deserve a forever home & people who are prepared to care for me properly.

  60. Unfortunately, our Dominique hen passed away this evening. Yesterday
morning I noticed she was very lethargic and not eating. After inspecting it
looked as though she had vent gleet. I separated her from the flock. I gave her
a warm bath and washed her very well. Then, I went to town and bought yogurt
and vitamins for her water. She rested well last night. Today, I ran around
town looking for Veterycin, preparation H and Deramycin-10. When I finally got
back home, I was prepared to treat her, I took her from the isolation crate,
laid her down to clean her vent and she started to vomit and passed away within
    10-15 seconds. It was awful!

  112. The link takes me to the 3/28 post, but should it go here? Double posting, hoping to win. By the way, I've got serious chicken fever. After looking over area farm people that breed and sell chickens, would you buy from a company like McMurray or go with local peeps? Our first flock we bought at our local feed store who got them from a big hatchery about 80 miles away. Since we've moved, I'm not sure what to do. We never lost a chicken to any kind of sickness before I'm a little concerned about getting different breeds from different farms and possibly bringing something to our own farm. So my brain leans toward a MM purchase but my heart wants to support local economy. Thoughts?

I used Vetericyn wound spray on some of my hens when they were attacked by dogs, they were torn up pretty bad.. They are alive and laying eggs today because of the spray.. I keep a bottle of it on hand at all times..

Not chicken related but I feel lucky. I was stung by a bee today. Last time I was stung I quit breathing, was injected with an epi pen and barely made it. I am so thankful I got to read this belated flock focus Friday. Thanks for all you do Kathy!!

That's really odd, Jeri. Which link/where was it? You're not the only one who went to that 3/28 post. I'm confused.

I would go with an NPIP certified breeder if one was local.
