    Kathy,
I've been foraging like a chicken lately--collecting the wild violets that are popping up all over the yard. With these pretty flowers I've made wild violet syrup and wild violet sugar, and then I took those (long-storing) foraged feats and made muffins (and more). It's a delightful seasonal treat.
In honor of the upcoming chip and guacamole fest that is Cinco de Mayo I've got a Cheater Margarita Smoothie--a pitcher full of refreshing frozen fruity beverage plus a non-alcoholic version for the kids.
Finally, I've got a rant about leftover that includes a recipe for a fast, easy, use-up-the-leftovers Taco Rice Tortilla Pizza.
    Thanks a bunch for hosting!

  34. Hi Kathy! I'm itchin' to do some hatching...but never again in my 'home made' incubator! Getting up 3 to 4 times a night to check on the temperature isn't my idea of fun. Some day, I'll have a bright shiny new incubator that self regulates its temperature!! Heaven. Have fun!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I see eggs available everywhere around me and the kids want one of these so badly! Crossing my fingers.

Thank you for your blog. I've really enjoyed it. I had some buff orpingtons a couple of years ago and I'm looking forward to having them again on my new farm which I'm moving to soon :) I'm happy to have learned to put them in a rabbit cage to cool their bellies when they turn broody. I used to take them off the eggs and I called them my pterodactyls. Right now I'm down to 6 ducks which are interesting but not the same as chickens! Your blog/website is very informative and I love the daily Rachel! I'm also looking into getting a herritage breed White Dorkings which I learned about from our local chicken seminar. We have a breeder up the road from us. I have not hatched eggs but would love to try. Again ~ thanks for your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jessi Carson4/27/14, 5:21 PM

Oh, fabulous. The one I have now we can only fit 12 eggs in. So every 25 days (21 days to hatch, 3 days before going to the brooder, 1 day to clean and air out), we are refilling. I have eggs in mine now, and my brother has to wait until next month to put some of his eggs in it. This would combine the entire process.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I would love to win this incubator. We tried to hatch eggs using a homemade incubator and it didn't work. My kids were SO disappointed. Thank you for this site I have learned so much about chickens.

    ReplyDelete
  106. We just started chickens this year (six amazing Australorps) and have been talking about hatching out Japanese quail eggs in the future. This prize would be just what we need! I've been amazed by how involved my eleven year old son has been with the chickens we got as day old chicks (he's even taken to "sleeping" in the chicks' room - which means little sleep for him until they, or he, move out). We'd both love to be able to hatch out some chicks of our own (quail first and then...?)

  156. This would be an amazing item to have to teach kids about baby chicks without having to have a rooster! We live in city limits, so we aren't allowed to have a rooster. Gotta buy chicks in the Spring around here when you can't raise your own. My four year old loves the chicks we got last year and is being so responsible for the ones we got this year! Once we got the new crop, she has started taking over a lot of the animal care responsibilities. She feeds, waters, cleans the cages, etc. :) So proud of her!

I have a table top incubator but this one looks really nice. This is only the 2nd time I have tried incubating eggs and last time out of 10 eggs only 2 hatched. It was a learning experience. This time I ordered 3 doz eggs out of Oregon (BCM eggs) and the fellow threw in another 8 (bless him!) and I am in process of incubating...but I am having trouble with the temp control I think... guess I will find out in another 15 days if I get any hatching. But this incubator looks great and would love to get one of these!! :) it would be so neat if I could win this!! :)
