Flock Focus Friday, 3/14/14

From a chicken photography perspective, this week hasn't been ideal, but we did see the sun briefly and I took advantage of it whenever possible. In between sub-zero temperatures and temps in the mid 50s, there was flooding, mud and general discontent. We're all looking forward to the end of winter and brighter days ahead!
Basket of eggs at Flock Focus Friday at The Chicken Chick®
The week began with chickens foraging on frozen grass and lots of snow cover.
The middle of the week featured a warm-up and flooding like we've never seen before. It was decidedly a drag as I bailed out the basement as well as the chicken runs.
The chicken runs took on water.
Caesar and Portia, my Serama pair.

Spartacus (a Red Sex Link/Serama cross)
Spartacus, a mixed breed rooster.
A little more thawing, a little more flooding.
A little more thawing. A little more flooding.
Doc Brown (White Crested Black Polish hen) looks no worse for the wear.
Polish crested hen.
Caesar and Portia wading through the muck. They're just happy to get out of the chicken run lately.
Serama rooster and hen.
And this is what the chicken run looked like in certain spots after the thaw re-froze.

  17. Your little Serama duo don't even look real. They're like little chicken dolls. LOVE THEM!
Last summer I had no issues with wildbirds in the run but already this spring the little birdies have found the feed and the chickens are now "sharing" their food with a million dinner guests.

I need this feeder! But like you, I didn't need water in the basement this week. The only good thing about the frigid cold snap, was that the water stopped running thru the basement!

I have my first chicks on the way! My students have been incubating some eggs from their farm, and the babies that hatched out today will be living in my back room at school. Also went to the poultry place and picked up a welsummer chick. I'm so happy to be getting some new girls! (Could use a Grandpa's feeder to save some money!)

  23. Eilene Corcoran3/14/14, 8:24 PM

I had a little starling last year that decided it was a chicken and moved in with my girls. The little bird and the easter egger would chase each other back and forth in the run all afternoon, playing. When we let them out to forage, they could chase each other all the way across the back yard. When the EE was chasing the starling, the starling decided to land on my dog's back... SAFE! The EE just sort of stared at the little guy on the dog's back and weighed her options, while the dog looked absolutely nonplussed about the whole thing. Wish I'd had a camera.

I want to win one! I'm getting a fairly bad problem with mice. But I would need around 7 of these things for my pens, which I can't afford!
