Flock Focus Friday, 3/21/14 with The Chicken Chick featuring THREE Giveaways!

Some of my favorite photos from my backyard and chickens this week.
We celebrated National Poultry Day on March 19th along with the three year anniversary of my blog and Facebook page, both of which were launched as marketing tools for my custom egg carton labels business. And while my egg carton labels business is crankin', you'll rarely hear me promote it for two reasons. First, the label business is bigger and busier than I ever intended it to be and I can barely keep up with orders along with everything else I have cooking online and offline. And second, the labels have long since taken a back seat to sharing a passion for keeping backyard chickens happy and healthy. I did not intend for my life to take a turn from trial attorney to pet chicken resource, but I am having the time of my life with every aspect of it. I have some very exciting opportunities coming up in the near future that I never saw coming and I look forward to sharing them with you and continuing to share this chicken-keeping adventure with you for many years to come!

The gloomy weather provided the backdrop for one of my new favorite egg photos.
Egg production is up!
My Buff Orpington pullet has been spending quite a lot of time in the nest box, which suggests that she'll want to brood chicks soon as the breed is inclined to do. I think I can accommodate her with some fertile eggs!
Buff Orpington pullet, going broody.
While spending time with my birds, Sparky alerted us all to the threat overhead. The girls all scooted quickly into the run and he moved on without incident.
Hawk circling the chicken yard.
Ally McBeak (Tolbunt Polish Frizzle) had been in the basement for a time to re-grow feathers on her head after having been pecked, but she's back in the mix with a ponytail to conceal the newly emerging feathers. She hated the elastic band and had removed it by the next morning.

Several of the hens are molting, including Ally McBeak (above) and Irene, my Bantam Welsummer (below).
Freida (White Silkie) and Spartacus (Red Sex Link x Serama.
White Silkie and mixed breed rooster
Guess what? (I can't help it!)
 Guess what?
With Bertha (Partridge Cochin facing camera) and the two, Dark Cornish hens (that we bought at the poultry show in January) out of quarantine, integration went swimmingly and they're now exploring their new world freely! Bertha seems to be acting as their new, surrogate mother.

________
  I'm UP! If you're expecting bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, go catch a squirrel.
 SERIOUSLY?!
Coffee has a distinctive aroma that helps you forget how painful it is to be awake.
 Winner, Winner...!!!
Then she had the audacity to ask if I wanted regular or decaf. I said, "Honey, it's Monday...don't even play."
It's 5am and you're trying to sleep? Allow me to sing you the song of my people!
Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful.
I'll be fine just as soon as the caffeine kicks in.

After almost 16 years of raising chickens, I've only had one previous attack. It was a hawk against some pullets (lost two). Well, that changed this past week. Can't be positive as to what the predator was, but wasn't able to find any prints. One hen (Leghorn) died, one rooster (BR) injury on his shoulder and missing feathers, and other rooster (unknown breed) traumatized. That wasn't as bad as what happened to my neighbor on the very same day; she lost six of nine hens. Same mo......no prints and no sign of feathers. We both lean toward a flock of migrating hawks which we had sighted the day before. Thank goodness we haven't seen them since.

Congrats on your three year anniversary! I love reading your tips, and have been working on adding sand to my run and just got Brooder Bottle Caps for my littles. Last year I "inherited" the Yakima City Chickens FB page, promoting city chickens and small flocks in our local area. I spent last weekend talking chicks in the booth for the farm co-op my hubby works for, and in two weeks I'll be at their customer appreciation day with my flock, talking about caring for small flocks and the benefits of really fresh, non-commercial eggs. I love passing on some of your tips and give out info for your FB page as well.

Hello, I am so happy that I have found your blog. I have kept hens for several years now with a wonderful backyard coop my husband built for me out of Cedar. Between working at a hospital in a laboratory, my husband, my teen daughter and my hens, I find myself being busy which I love. I am excited to be adding a new brood of chicks soon from mypetchicken.com. Being a person from a medical background, I am so worried about my babies being shipped via mail but I am certain all will be positive and the chicks will be fine. Thank you for the information you post on your blog, I have some new ideas I want to incorporate into my own coop such as the nest box curtains.

If that overhead threat is a turkey vulture, it's not a threat to chickens because it's a scavenger not a predator. We have lots of them around here (Stanislaus National Forest near Yosemite National Park) soaring overhead as they ride the thermals. We also have lots of ravens. The chickens are afraid of any large birds above, which is good because once in a while a red-tailed hawk shows up looking for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. When the ravens are around, they get on the tail of the hawk and send it away. Haven't lost a chicken to a predator so far, although have lost some guinea fowl who insist on spending the night outside. But no one said guineas are geniuses.

Thank you so much for the adding floor space blog. It gave us almost quadruple the floor space. Question if you have time: Does covering the opening of the nest boxes do something better than not putting it up? I have never seen it before and I'm curious as to what function it plays? Thanks
