Flock Focus Friday, 1/3/14

We've been battling harsh winter elements this week, from freezing rain to snow and bitterly cold temperatures, the likes of which we have not experienced in years. We welcomed two new chicks, which hatched on New Year's Day and are pleased to introduce you to and welcome our newest sponsor to our flock, Sarah Hudock!

Sarah is an artist, fellow New Englander, chicken-keeper and very talented artist who reached out to me a few weeks ago and I'm very excited to share her work with you today as a giveaway and look forward to our partnership this year.
A little bit about Sarah Hudock... Sarah lives on a small homestead in scenic Vermont with her husband, flock of 25+ chickens and an undisclosed number of cats. She is a self-taught artist who hand-paints her images in watercolor, gouache and acrylic. Sometimes her paintings are only hand-painted, and sometimes created with a combination of digital effects and scans of various materials she finds visually interesting. Fun, right?
The flockers are holding up well to the cold and snow that fell later in the week, but the roosters have been fending off frostbite with all their might.
Blaze, (Black Copper Marans rooster) shows signs of mild frostbite on his comb and wattles.
Mr. Chicken Chick laughs at me nightly as I don my spelunker headlamp and trudge out to the coops, Eucerin cream in hand, to slather up the roosters' combs and wattles. After dark is the best time to treat chickens for any purpose including frostbite, checking feet for bumblefoot or external parasites. If you don't have a headlamp, I highly recommend acquiring one. Disregard any heckling from the family.

This is the first Black Copper Marans chick that hatched on New Year's Day.
If you missed the hatch live, you can catch the recording here.
My Blue Splash Marans, Windy, was featured in Hobby Farms Magazine this week, much to her dismay, it was not her most flattering photo. She's my bumblefoot frequent-flyer, but is in good shape today.

Her agent called and insisted on the inclusion of this photo of  Windy's better side.
The view from the hatchway to the house this morning. The shovel awaits the next heaping mess of snow that's on its way later tonight.
Buff Orpington pullet. No name yet.
Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) enjoys some frozen grass while
Blaze (Black Copper Marans) stands guard. That's love.
What's up, Doc? Doc Brown is a White Crested Black Polish hen. She's a sweetie.
Vera (Red Sex Link pullet) at sunset.
Penny. Poor Penny, molting hard at the worst of all possible times of the year. She's holding up with plenty of friends surrounding her on the roost at night and in feathered huddles during the way when necessary. Penny is an Olive Egger.

  2. I suggest Soleil as a name for the Buff Orph beauty. Her coloring is such a bright pretty gold, I think the name is fitting. Great pics as usual. Love the new sponsor's art, it's super cute. Have a great weekend.

I really like the print from Sara H.I sure hope I win it! I also am enjoying all the post from you page as well! I have four hens and a rooster. This past year was my first to raise chickens but they are producing eggs well and I have a lovely coop my husband built for me with the help of my son, my late daughter who we lost this past year and my son in law. My daughter who was 27 really enjoy the chickens as much as I do and was a great help to me in so many ways. My four girls and their guy live contently in their little mansion. I plan to expand this coming summer to include a chicken garden for them to roam in and include some of my vegetable gardening in with the flowers and other plants I am working on having for them for food and shelter. This is a new adventure for me, but my ultimate goal is to have a sustainable farm. One I can continue after retirement by including raised beds.Keep the good articles, tips and artwork coming.

I love seeing your pictures every day! I didn't think I could become attached to someone else's chickens, but I am so use to seeing Rachel every day that it's almost like she's a part of my flock too! I love that "Wine O'Clock" print! *Fingers crossed*

Whimsical art that I think is the chicken's knees...or is it the bee's knees? Wait, do chickens even have knees? Come to think of it, bees don't have knees. How did I get on this train!?
