Flock Focus Friday, 1/17/14 featuring a Brinsea EcoGlow Brooder GIVEAWAY!

This week's photo essay from Blazing Trails Farm feels dark as most of the week has been snowy, rainy, foggy, grey and overall, blah. Thankfully the temperatures have been above freezing most of the time, which has given the roosters a chance to recover a bit from frostbite. Please enjoy the photos and your weekend!

When it snows, the chickens will come out of the coops if I shovel,
only to pace back and forth between coops. Some exercise is better than no exercise I suppose.
What? Do I have something on my face?
The fluffy white stuff was short-lived as torrential rain moved in and made a slushy mess of things.

Blaze chases Sparky a couple times a day to remind him who is in charge of the backyard.
They're both Black Copper Marans. Blaze is Sparky's dad.
Kate (Speckled Sussex)
Rainy eggs.
Blaze & Portia (Serama hen).
Caesar (Serama cockerel)
Blaze and the ladies.
Blaze (left) and Sparky (right) maintain a respectful distance from one another.
Thanks for joining me and have a great week!

The winners of last week's Flock Focus Friday giveaway are:  TBA HERE.

When we have raised chicks inside I always have a heat lamp clamped to the side of the "nursery" and it makes me very nervous that if someone was to jump onto it it could possibly fall into the cage. This product seems like a much safer way to keep those babies warm! I would love love love to win it!!!

  31. Your Maran roosters are beautiful. I wish ours would get along. We have to pen them separately or they fight. We just hatched our first set of chicks artificially. We've always used broody hens in the past. A brooder like that would make things a lot easier.

I had put an incubator on my Christmas list but didn't get one. I would definitely hatch eggs if I had one though. My son would love it too. He says he would take the chicks to school for show and tell (we stopped by our sons class last year after picking up our hatchlings. The kids all loved the babies and were thrilled to hold them and learn a little bit about them in the short time we were there. They were especially intrigued to learn that chicks are born with a tooth! Every time I went to school after that I had tons of kids come running up to me to ask how the chicks were doing! Having an incubator would be awesome.

  71. Right now I really could use another one of these. My first one is being overused. I love your pictures above. They cracked me up. Now in the picture that says "Coffee? Did someone say coffee." >what kind of chicken is he???? Absolutely beautiful. Thanks Kathy for all you do. I really appreciate it and so you know..it is all your fault I have another hatch starting today hopefully. I experimented with a stagger (2days apart) hatch with just four eggs. Got next batch of eggs all ready to go in after I give incy a one day rest. Nope I do not have a problem at all. I keep getting roosters instead of girls and i need more girls. Christmas hatch 2 roos and 1 girl I think.

I really would LOVE the brooder lamp! When we ordered our first chicks last year I picked out my roosters based on looks rather than looking at the breed's production info... If we let the eggs hatch this year I am afraid we would end up with a bunch of girls that don't lay well. So, we have decided that we need to order a few more boys and re-home the ones we have in order to have a self sustaining flock. Or maybe I'll break down and build a second coop and move the boys over there.... haven't had to get rid of any yet. They are still pets rather than farm animals to us!! This lamp would be a great help! Our first chicks were under a regular heat lamp! YIKES! Would love to be safer this time! And the 24th is my birthday, so maybe that will bring me some luck!! Please!! Please!! Please!! It would be a GREAT birthday present! wink wink! LOL
