Flock Focus Friday, 1/10/14 with TWO Giveaways!

Mother Nature was not kind to us this week with record-setting low temperatures creating challenges such as frostbite and frozen eggs. The chickens have been confined to the covered runs much of the week and at least one of the roosters has taken up residence in the basement to protect from further cold damage to his comb and wattles. Even picture taking was made difficult by the brutal cold, but I eked out a few for you.

2 GIVEAWAYS!
1/10/14-1/17/14 9pm EST
Enter to WIN
1. A Happy Hen Treats Prize Package, which includes:
Mealworm Frenzy, Sunflower Sensation AND a Treat Ball!
or
2. A copy of the Commemorative 5 Year Anniversary Edition of Hobby Farms' Chickens Magazine featuring Portia, Freida and Rachel!

The windswept backyard.
Sparky asserted his leadership when Blaze was put on the DL
with frostbite and brought into the basement most of the week to recover.
ellen deHeneres is a Marans- her father is a Black Copper Marans
and her mother is a Wheaten Marans.
The sun came out once or twice this week warming temperatures up into the twenties and the flock was able to get out for an hour or so just before dusk.
 Froggy coops.
 Marilyn Monroe (White Orpington)
Frozen eggs are breaking hearts all over the country in the frigid temperatures we have been suffering this winter, but I came up with a solution to warm up the nest boxes just enough to prevent wasted eggs.
Check out my DIY instructions for a Nest Box Cozy to keep your hens' eggs from freezing!
Caesar's (Serama cockerel)  personality has really blossomed since he found his voice. He's super friendly and inquisitive. Just like his brother Brutus who passed away in August, his personality is larger than life and he has no idea I could fit him in my pocket. Totally adorable.
 Striped eggs?
Portia (Serama pullet) and a few other brave flock members made a break for bare grass. I hope they enjoyed it because it snowed the next day with no grass to be seen. Again.

This past year was my first attempt of raising chickens. We started off with just 3 to test the waters, and that they were. The rooster had to be taken to another home because he became very aggressive and one of the hens had been killed by the neighbors dog. We are left with our Scarlet, such a lonely chicken she has been and in turn has gotten so much human affection. In the spring we plan on getting more hens to teach Scarlet the life of a chicken :), I do have to thank you for all you have taught us on raising chickens and without your blogs and your facebook, I think we would of given up but instead I am anxious for the spring and more babies.

Brrrr! It has been insanely cold! Thanks to your advice on keeping chickens in the winter...my feather babies made it during the cold snap with no injuries just a grudge against me for keeping them locked up until the temperatures returned to "winter normal" here in SWVA! =) Sometimes...being a parent is hard! ;-) (Including the loss of sleep worrying about them when the wind-chill hit -30 degrees) Thank you from the bottom of my and my feather babies hearts!

When the wind chill was going to hit at -30 I realized looking at the hens in the nest boxes that now we had nest pads and not straw = no protection. The Ameracaunas had a solution, dive under the nest boxes where there was straw and lay all there eggs there. It was cute, a nest of blue. No frozen blue eggs though!

I love reading about the exploits of your flock. I love that they have such unique names. With so many birds I don't know how you come up with such great names. I've given up naming all of ours.

  171. Thank you so much for the helpful advice. It makes feel like I am taking better care of my girls. ( Ladies all but one is laying now) At what point do you know you have a rooster? My one in question is a Brahma. "she" is twice as big as her sister. And no eggs from her yet. Sister has been laying for a week now.

Love the names of you chickens. Hubby thought it was weird that I wanted to name our chickens, then we got a silkie with a black poofy hairdo. He said she looked like Patti Labelle. And he named his first chicken. :-)

  182. Thanks to your blog, my husband has built new nest boxes, requiring new curtains, I am purchasing a chicken waterer, and now he's eyeing the hobbit houses, which I love. Our 4 chicks are so spoiled, and we are astounded with their personalities. Thanks for the OCD.

  197. Loving the coffee posts lately! Thanks for cracking me up :) I think in the one where you "would have to replace coffee with violence" the chicken is making one of the faces I make. Oh and the one where " I only want to hear about your workout if you fell of the treadmill and smashed your face" CLASSIC! totally shared both on the facebook ;)
