Flock Focus Friday, 12/6/13

Dank. That's was this week in a word. The temperatures were relatively mild, so the flockers took advantage of the opportunity to be outside despite the fog, drizzle, wind and ubiquitous grayness. The challenge this week was to figure out what to do about the one Black Copper Marans chick that hatched Thanksgiving night whom I named Kris Kringle. For once I was without a broody hen to rely on to raise it. The chick seemed content underneath its EcoGlow brooder, but I know that it needs other chickens to thrive and that raising it alone inside the house could result in major problems come time to integrate it into the flock.  So...I threw up a Hail Mary pass to Freida.

Freida, my White Silkie and Flock matriarch, was perfectly happy to be roosting with the rest of the ladies when I plucked her from the roost and introduced her to Kris Kringle.
An awkward moment or two of staring at one another quickly evolved into acceptance and the beginning of a mother-chick relationship. Freida's the best.
Sparky (Black Copper Marans cockerel) is in fine form, vying for the Sexiest Rooster Alive title.
Lola (Columbian Wyandotte hen) was significantly less enthusiastic about being photographed this week as she trudges through a most hideous molt
Kate (Speckled Sussex) is always up in my business until she can determine whether I've brought treats for her or not.
Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) and Blaze (Black Copper Marans rooster in back)
 Annie, a Blue Ameraucana.

  16. My silly chickens have figured out that a closed hand means that I am holding treats, and if I make a fist, they are all over me until I open my hand to show them that there is nothing there. It is also how I call them over.

  102. JessicaHughett12/6/13, 10:52 PM

Thank you! My friend's mother adopted a hen and a roo that apparently had gape worm and by the time she realized what was going on and treated them..it was too late. So her husband got her 3 new chickens. Unfortunately. .She has RA and back trouble and silkies are quick. She couldn't bend or catch them. She's called and ask me to take them because she knew they would be loved and cared for here. Still in isolation. .but they seem to be adjusting well. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Wendy Campbell12/6/13, 10:52 PM

I could sure use the predator package. I watched as a coyote took one of the girls right off the deck and then came back for another. Didn't get a second one.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wow! That roost is amazing. I thought chickens needed something like 12" per hen roost space. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  105. It's been almost hot here but haven't seen a ray of sunshine for nearly a week, always either fog or rain. The chickens say "We don't live in England!!!!". Hehe glad I'm not getting snow though!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Ferne McAllister12/6/13, 11:36 PM

First, bless that Freida - so glad it worked out. Secondly, your giveaway is a killer - it's like the rare occasion I buy a powerball ticket (once every five years or so) and stay up all night imagining how I'd divide up the winnings between family, friends, worthy causes, chickens, the disabled and the elderly.... makes my head spin, I'll tell ya...

    ReplyDelete

Please tell Lola that it's what's INSIDE that counts. She's lovely, hideous molt notwithstanding. You go girl!

  159. I've never heard of Predator Pee. Progress has invaded our lil bit of country. Toll road going in here. Coyotes and bobcats hunting same territory along with red tailed and chicken hawks hunting together for anything that moves. My heart breaks for the predators and prey. I don't believe that pee would make a difference right now.

  190. I love all your giveaways! The hen bag would be awesome to win but we could definitely use either of the other two items as well. We have raccoon, fox, and coyote in the neighborhood (NOT in a rural area but in an established subdivision in busy-suburbia) so I'm always worried about leaving the girls during the day.

  196. I have to say, I think Frieda was more happy to raise a chick than to stay on that roost with the other chickens. She looks squished in the photo! lol I am glad she is a good momma and takes on the littles with no problems. I haven't had the joy yet of raising my own babies and having chicken momma's take care of them but I have with cats and kittens and this year my momma cat accepted 2 orphans as her own. It is such a wonderful thing to see and feel. You go Frieda!

I cant wait to go the feed store with this chicken purse on my arm! predator pee? It doesnt scare the chickens? Probiotics are good for your chickens as well as yourself! I'm fairly new to Google plus but its worth a try. You have great Pinterest boards also!
