Flock Focus Friday, 12/27/13

Christmas week here at Blazing Trails Farm was a challenge with on again, off again snow alternating with rain and sunshine. We are expecting eggs to hatch this coming week and are looking forward to sharing that experience with you as it happens, live!

 Guess what? :)
This Olive Egger has made it her mission to remove the berries from the coop garland.
The Olive Egger in the nest box on the right has been broody for nearly two weeks. When the eggs in the incubator hatch, I'll slip them underneath her to raise.
Lola (Columbian Wyandotte hen) has finished molting and her new feathers look spectacular.
Sparky (Black Copper Marans roo) and ellen deHeneres, (a Marans hen cross between a Black Copper Marans and a Wheaten Marans).
Christmas morning breakfast consisted of steel cut and regular oatmeal with blueberries, apples and bananas. I put out several loaf pans so that there was no bickering and nobody left out.
Spartacus (Serama X Red Sex Link) and his mom, Windy (a Blue Splash Marans)
Caesar, a Serama cockerel began crowing this week and it was adorable.
Nobody loves eating snow more than Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle)
Most chickens dislike snow, but mine have gotten used to it. I suppose that's what happens when you live in New England.

Thanks for joining me and have a great week!

The winners of last week's Flock Focus Friday giveaway are:  TBA HERE.

  6. I'm glad for you that Lola is finished molting! I have a Columbian Wyandotte named Dottie. She has the most feathers of my whole flock (8) and when she does molt someone will probably have to come find me and drag me out of a giant pile of feathers!

Happy Hens Treats are just what my little girls need!.... Had to be away from home for an emergency for 3 weeks, and got back days before Christmas, so my little girls are feeling like orphans these days... Now that things are settling down, we can get back to spoiling and pampering! Hope you had a great Christmas, and may you have a wonderful start to 2014!

  31. Hope to win some chicken crack, our cooped fowl have a $20.00 a week habit. we may have to have an intervention soon. I am hesitant to stop them "cold turkey". any one with a fowl 12 step program, it may be hopeless due to the fact the flock does not have a desire to quit.

I have to believe my girls are very happy. This is their 2nd winter laying eggs. I read the first year is pretty normal but I thought for sure the 2nd year they would stop. Not complaining but almost each day they are laying eggs. Perhaps it is the scrambled eggs/warm water I give them in the freezing mornings and the black oil sunflower seeds I offer right before bed. Not too much but just enough to get their digestion going at bed time.
