Flock Focus Friday, 12/20/13

]
We enjoyed several days of beautiful snowfalls this week and while the chickens have adjusted to the idea of the white stuff, it'll be gone soon with 60°F temperatures predicted for this weekend.
BRINSEA EcoGlow 20 Brooder
GIVEAWAY!
12/20/13-12/27/13 9pm EST
Read about the EcoGlow here.
ENTRY DETAILS BELOW!

Sparky above & his dad, Blaze, below (both Black Copper Marans roosters) keep a respectful distance from one another. There is no question that Blaze remains the Alpha roo and king of the flock.
This was the first of two snowfalls this week. I shoveled the walkway and the flock spent the day walking back and forth between the two coops.
(above, left to right) Doc Brown (Polish Crested hen) Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) and Kate (Speckled Sussex) reenacting the scene from The Beatles Abbey Road
Below, Ally McBeak (Tolbunt Polish Frizzle pullet)
The second storm this week left 5-6 inches of fluffy stuff.
I brought Rachel up to the house for a little photo op for my 8 year
old daughter who is honing her third grade photography skills.
 Sparky. Purdy.
View from the house.

Despite a half a foot of snow on the ground, my flock enjoys dust bathing inside the runs. I can't recommend sand in a covered run any more highly.
Caesar (Serama cockerel) and adoptive mom, Windy (Blue Splash Marans)

Thanks for joining me and have a great week!

  83. Always open up my computer to your page every morning to read and get ideas. Have incorporated many things into my little coop. I have one problem though, I have an absolutely wide ope yard...no bushed/trees/etc. I am paranoid about letting my 4 ladies free-range for fear of the hawks around here. If they do venture down to the tree line on the back of our 2 acres, they are in danger there also. I would love to allow them the freedom of the yard.. What do I do? Its too cold to be able to sit out there to watch them.

    ReplyDelete

  89. TheChickenChick12/21/13, 10:56 AM

That's the dilemma with free-ranging, especially with hawks. These are my best suggestions, but beyond that, it's just a calculated risk: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html

  194. Thanks.....I ckd' it out and have done most is not more to make my little coop a little Ft.Knox. I have no fears of losing them while in the pen. And I only have 4 in a 4x10 ft run. I am looking at building another one using the kid's playground that they have out grown. I will fix it just as secure.
