    Kathy,
Those photos of chickens in the snow would make an excellent chicken pin up calendar, um, if other people also wanted to pin up photos of chickens looking resplendent . . . perhaps I'm just weird!
Today I'm linking up a monster recipe round up--65 other bloggers answered my calls and provided me with recipes in honor of my son's band fruit fundraiser. I collated/curated/whatever them into 13 categories and I share with you 156 Fall and Winter Fruit Recipes. I've got sweet recipes, savory recipes, gluten free recipes, vegan recipes--recipes from breakfast through dessert plus some to put up for later!
Since I spent Saturday morning hauling cases of fruit hither and yon, I'm delighted to have such inspiration and to share it with you.
One such round up-inspired recipe is (deep breath) Orange Teriyaki Slaw Stir Fry with Orange Ginger Sriracha Turkey Meatballs. This colorful dinner came together quickly and the whole family enjoyed it. I think I've successfully erased the red cabbage stigma after the unfortunate Grilled Radicchio incident of '08.
Finally--a pizza! I made an Everything Bagel Focaccia, then set out our favorite bagel toppings and we enjoyed a(n evening) Brunch Bar with everyone topping their slices as they see fit.
    Thanks for hosting!

  81. Alan Shinaver12/11/13, 11:36 AM

I am learning a lot from your FB posts as a newcomer to chicken keeping. Although I haven't tried this idea, I am keep thinking that a radiant heater for the coop made much like the cookie tin waterer heater using a tall tin and having a ceramic lamp fixture attached to the inside of the lid, using an appliance bulb, and attach a chain to hang securely from the ceiling/rafters like a swag lamp. It wouldn't give off light and only a minimal amount of heat. Seems like it would be workable if you need to raise the temp over the roost a few degrees on bitter nights.

    ReplyDelete
  82. thanks for the chance to be a winner and all the great information on your site!

  85. Soooooooooooooooooooo need this book! After finally finishing the fence around the back yard, was so excited to take them out of the small pen to let them finally stretch their wings. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what they did to my gardens! Can't believe the destruction 6 little hens can do! Now, I fondly refer to them as my "Daughters of Destruction"! they have laid waste to the entire back yard.................and have a really good time doing it too! Got to love them! But, a few flowers would be nice..............or even a bush!

  103. Thanks for all the great suggestions, advice, giveaways, and photos. You have really inspired me in my chicken-keeping projects, and helped me avoid some real pitfalls. I have met several folks since starting this little hobby of mine who say they are thinking of getting some backyard chickens. First thing out of my mouth is, "What are you going to do to protect them from predators?" I inevitably have to give the hardware cloth vs. chicken wire talk...

    ReplyDelete

I'd love to win a prize for my husband, who is the main caregiver for our little five hen flock. I get to change their water frequently, though in this frigid New England weather. Hope I can talk him into making a cookie tin water heater for this winter. Seems very simple, and I got the tin last winter.

LOL! Thanks for asking, the black eye is fading into a lovely, holiday green/yellow and the poison ivy responded well to the meds. :)

I thought I entered this but can not find it. I might need the book for dummies but I really want the scratch and peck feed. Loved the comment below about her "daughters of destruction." Every Saturday I blow or rake pine straw back to the place it belongs. I can relate!
