Flock Focus Friday, 11/29/13

This week's backyard highlights included bitter cold, high winds, driving rain, an aerial surprise and a tragic accident resulting in the loss of a flock member. We also gained a new flock member last night as this little one hatched after Thanksgiving dinner.

(L to Rt)  Spartacus (Serama x Red Sex Link cockerel)-Caesar (Serama cockerel) and Afrodite (White Crested, Black Polish bantam frizzle)
We lost Afrodite in a freak accident on Wednesday and while she wasn't with us very long, she certainly left a lasting impression upon our hearts. Her presence is already missed. RIP girl.
 Sparky (Black Copper Marans cockerel)
Rachel (bantam Cochin Frizzle) spent most of the week in the Broody Breaker. She snapped out of it just in time for Thanksgiving and is happy to be back free-ranging with the rest of the flockers.
Doc Brown (White Crested Black Polish hen)
We received a visit from this bald eagle yesterday afternoon, which was a rare, if not frightening, sighting in our neck of the woods. He didn't stick around long, thankfully. Blaze and Sparky alerted all of us to his presence with their unmistakable warning sounds. Everyone rushed immediately to the safety of the coops and runs.
Caesar (Serama Cockerel) is beginning to feather out beautifully.

Thanks for joining me and have a great weekend!

  1. I am so sorry about Afrodite. :-( We have one chicken that likes to get in our way quite a bit and I'm always worried about either crushing her, or breaking my own neck...

  13. I am subscribed to your blog and would love to be entered in the give away! I also have a question about one of my chickens that has perpetual diarrhea. She is the only one in the flock with this issue and she's over three years old. I put acv in her/their water. I sometimes will feed yogurt too. She keeps chugging along but her backside is a mess. I've tried washing her backside, but it doesn't stay clean for long. Have you heard of giving epsom salts to chickens with this problem? I'm in love with my girls but have budget constraints. I have brought a chicken to the vet before, but it's an hour to the vet that will actually see chickens and super costly. I've also had the same vet out for a flock inspection when I first started raising chickens over three years ago and I noticed one had passed a worm. Any tips appreciated.

I'd have a fecal float test done to rule out parasites first. That's a very inexpensive test. I would then start putting probiotics in their water. Skip the ACV and use the probiotics and see if that helps her.

  84. Kathy, I'm so sorry about Afrodite. :(

Thank you for a chance to win more great prizes! I appreciate the chance. :)

Also, I wanted to thank you for sharing the information about each state's poultry lab. When my five month old White Plymouth Rock passed after about 2 weeks of not being quite herself, I was able to take her to the poultry lab only 20 minutes from my house, for a necropsy. Turns out she had a perforated lesion in her abdominal cavity, which caused an infection. In addition, she had moderate to severe lymphoma in her liver and kidney. Poor girl; we miss her. She was such a sweetie.

If it weren't for your blog, I wouldn't have even been aware of these free services. So a big thank you is coming your way! YOU are much appreciated! :)

Eagles are great to watch. We usually have 3 or 4 in the area all the time. But when you live in Minnesota and just up river from the National Eagle center it's to be expected. Red tailed hawks are a whole different cases.

  153. Those just might make all comfy to start some laying :)

I'm sorry about Afrodite. It's a constant shuffle in my coop, especially with the snow. For some reason the girls all flock to my feet to pick the snow off the toes of my boots. Makes for some pretty fancy footwork sometimes.

We have at least one mated pair of bald eagles at the lake near me, who return every winter. That's one of the reasons I have my girls completely enclosed!

These look like great liners! My one naked neck hen always scratches the nest box down to the wooden bottom, I think this would really help prevent that.
Is it ironic that all I want for Christmas this year is stuff for my chickens?? Hey Santa! these would be perfect under the tree!!

    Question...
You had in an earlier post about chickens living longer as our backyard friends, is there any special "Geriatric Care" for older birds? I have a 14 year old hen, some sort of Americauna cross (bantam), I think I am doing all of the right things for her but I am noticing she is slowing down some and is a bit 'spacey' as if she is getting a little senile. One of my other hens keeps an eye on her when they free range the yard and will actually go get her when it is time to go in at dusk. Could she be losing her eyesight possibly? It is remarkable to see these friends take care of her. Chickens are amazing beings.
