Flock Focus Friday, 10/25/13

This past week was highlighted by the meeting at the Zoning Commission on my petition to legalize chickens in town. The Commission has agreed with me unanimously that chickens ought to be permitted as a matter of right in residential neighborhoods! They are setting up a committee, which will include farming, agriculture and poultry experts, to craft language to amend the zoning regulations.
BIG win for backyard chickens!!
My argument to the Zoning Commission was taped live and can be viewed here.
Windy (Blue Splash Marans hen) is still keeping a close watch on her adoptive babies, Spartacus and the Polish Crested peeps.

This Frizzled Polish Crested chick still needs a name.

In other big news this week: Iris (an Olive Egger pullet) went broody for the first time and accepted 10 chicks as her own, which I hatched in an incubator.
With her vibrant, copper feathers, Vera (Red Sex Link pullet) is the autumn poster chick
Buff Orpington pullet, inspecting the day's haul. As everyone eases out of their molt, I'm finally getting blue Ameraucana eggs again. I can't even remember the last time I saw a blue egg in the nest boxes!
Freida (White Silkie hen) and Rachel, (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) enjoy the waning days of autmn.

Thanks for joining me and have a great weekend!

In reference to This Frizzled Polish Crested chick still needs a name.... I am thinking Moulan Rouge? Don't know why but she just struck me as a fancy pants kinda chick. A little bit flashy.

Well its true! lol I think its a great mix of Good information....User problems and solutions....good book knowledge on your part aka your page about weird eggs and such.... And the fact that you are accessible... You actually respond to posts and help with problems. If you just had a page that talked about chickens and you never answered anything this page wouldn't be as successful. I love scrolling through the user submitted pictures and seeing other peoples problems and your solutions that come up. Thanks for the reply!

I've had an exciting week. My son apprehended our wayward hen, I constructed a cozy yard & duplex for her and she escaped again. I fixed her escape routes and spotted, but was unable to capture her. She's a bird with an agenda...wish she'd share it with us. lol

After seeing your article awhile back about having a chicken first aid kit, I immediately went out and put one together. In addition to the Vetericyn, antibiotic cream, dressings, gloves, light, scissors, etc., I added a variety of colors of Vetwrap, syringes, biopsy punches, Qtips, iodine, Epsom salt and other stuff. The kit came in handy right away as we discovered bumble foot in several of the kids and had to treat it. My babies were quite the sight with their pink, purple, blue, yellow, red and green bandaged feet. They healed quickly and soon had spring in their steps again. Thanks for the great articles...I look forward to learning something new everytime I read one. Also, congrats on the zoning...chickens are great pets and should be welcomed everywhere!

My flock has grown to 9 hens and 2 roos (surprise from my spring chicks). I probably will have issues with my town too. One of the roos is a beautiful black silkie, partner for Frieda???? We finally won the rights to have chickens in town here too, except were not allowed roosters. I live in town, barely, on the endge of the county line on two acres and dont have a zero lot line, so I have a rooster. This is my first flock. I never thought I could love a chicken as much as I love mine. Next year, I want to expand. Would love to have the first aid kit. It's good to be prepared.

I have learned more from your blog and site than any of the books I've read. Nothing like real life experiences. I really love your pictures and reading about your experiences (although not so much with the problem neighbor -sorry). Great news on the zoning front too! the love blog- would love either of these. We currently are using Vetericyn on one of our pullets who has injured in the run the other day. Still not sure what happened, but suspect our Samon Faverolle Rooster. She is now in the "chicken hospital" getting lots of pets and love while she heals. My boys are always happy to love an ailing chicken back to health.

Way to go, Kathy! Yes, I listened to your presentation at the zoning commission. Well done. Lawyer suit a very professional touch. After all you said, the one comment that stood out like a sore thumb to me was the woman who said, "I REALLY don't want to hear roosters crowing while I'm getting ready for work in the morning." Just goes to show how disconnected we are as a society from our food sources.

Would love to win the Happy Treats for my spoiled little Ladies. I've already purchased the Vetericyn meds because you have already blogged about the importance of being ready for an emergency!
