Flock Focus Friday, 9/13/13

This past week was crazy busy, very tiring and wicked exciting. It kicked off with a weekend chock full of chicken chat as my husband and spoke with countless chicken supporters on the town green during the annual fall festival. The Zoning Commission meeting to legalize backyard chickens will be held this coming Monday and the town is currently looking for a bigger meeting room as attendance in favor of chicken-keeping is expected to exceed capacity under the fire code. RIGHT ON! Tune in on Monday, September 16th at 7:00 pm EST as I stream the hearing LIVE here.  There are two other matters on the agenda before mine, so punctuality isn't critical.

Molting continues to plague the older flockers, but signs of progress are evident.
Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) has pin feathers emerging from her neck and tail, which are painful, so I try not to handle her and continue to give her high-protein snacks and treats.

The Olive Egger, above and Black Copper Marans pullet, below, are both too young to molt, so they're responsible for carrying the egg production load while the molting girlz devote their energies to feather production.

The other exciting event this week was the hatching of four chicks. Blaze is the likely baby daddy of several of the chicks, but it appears that my dear departed Brutus may be the father of at least one of them. ♥ I don't know the breeds of the hens whose eggs they hatched from with the exception of the little brown and white chick, which was Vera's egglet (Red Sex Link pullet, below).
Blaze (Black Copper Marans rooster) and Vera (Red Sex Link pullet)

Blaze, the proud papa.

Thanks for visiting today and have a great weekend!

  8. This Brooder would be absolutely perfect for the upcoming spring, my daughter is starting the 4H poultry chain and the chicks we get will be 1 day old and we will have to keep them babies warm before moving them out to the chicken house. Wish I had known about these sooner, much better than the old tradition heat lamp hanging from a post (much safer too). Would love to win this! Thanks for the opportunity.

Love your blog. I have been reading it for months now. I used to have chickens along time ago and have missed them. We now live in an area the we can now have chickens. We are getting a coop from The Green Garden Chicken.com. It will be here next week and I'll be getting chicks about a week after that. We are getting all the things that the chicks will need to start with, but are starting with the heat lamp. I would really rather have the Brinsea Ecoglow brooder but we'll see.

I have a heat lamp. I've read this is the safer and more inexpensive way to go. Now that I have my own incubator I would love to give this option a try. PS Love the pics and it's great to hear you expect such a large crowd at the meeting. The chicken wave is mounting, I have more and more of my patients returning and asking right after hello.."hows your chickens". I work (not live) in a more HOA golf community type of area and yet....the first magazine on the rack at the top shelf is Backyard Chickens :)

and just wanted to add-- I'm totally LOVING the Rachel molt pictures you are posting lately! Can't get enough of those! SO funny! My chickens are starting to molt too. Looks like someone ripped open a feather pillow out there and shook it all over the yard! Bring on Rachel and her indignant glares! haha

  156. I do not have one single chicken, not even a coop. Why do I want the brooder, one small step towards my future chicken fun world. I promise to share all the knowledge I get from raising chickens, thanks

Would love one of these brooders. Loosing any of my animals due to fire is my greatest fear. Having one of these would make me feel more secure that they were safe.

The brooder is so much safer then a heat lamp bulb. I use to have a slight panic attack anytime I had to leave the house with that bulb on.

  174. I am now doing an egg dance. Two of my girls are doing the egg squat, so I run out every 5 minutes to check to see if there are any eggs, looking everywhere in case they didn't figure out what the nest box with the fake egg is all about the first time.

My family thinks that I am officially bonkers because I want to add four more birds in the spring. I blame my local feedstore. They had BANTAMS last time I went in. I nearly died. I almost came home with one in each pocket!

  198. Your new chicks are sooo cute. Congrats to the mama & proud papa. We had a hard time at our place last night found one of my girls acting strange and within 10 minutes she died in my arms. She had an egg lodged I believe and before I could help her I lost her.
