Flock Focus Friday, 8/16/13

Egg production has been down for a while now, primarily due to the number of broody hens waiting for chicks to hatch. We were happy to welcome four baby chicks to the flock, three Olive Eggers and one Black Copper Marans! This chick is having a seat on her mama hen, BroomHilda.
When the Olive Eggers grow up, they should lay beautiful olive colored eggs like this one.

Portia (Serama pullet)
Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) is beginning to molt. Molting starts at the head and works its way down and back.
Windy (Blue Splash Marans) has crooked toes one one foot, which causes her to carry more weight on the other foot. As a result, she gets bumblefoot from time-to-time. She needed to have the bumblefoot surgery this week, which was no fun for any of us.
Blaze (Black Copper Marans rooster) continues to heal from his wattle infection in June.
A barn in town after a rain storm this week.
My daughters' summer camp play was held at the theater next to this beautiful church on Friday.
Another new project was started in the ever evolving chicken coop this week. Walls over the studs will make cleaning much easier.
Brutus (Serama cockerel) doing his thang.

I know this probably isn't the right forum for this but I'm heart broken and I wanted to reach out to other chicken lovers. I lost my entire flock yesterday all of my little chicky babies. My neighbor had someone visiting who brings their vicious dog. Who bit our other neighbors puppy in the face. Well they don't watch the dog or keep it on a leash and it came on our property yesterday and killed all of our chickens. My husband and I are devastated. And of course the visitor the neighbor and the dog conveniently weren't around today to confront. We live in a rural area and none of us chain up our dogs but our dogs don't kill anyone pets. I'm just so upset. I don't know if I want to start over or not.

Quick question or 50 about incubating. I'm obviously a chicken addict at this point to all who know me. My basement is full on chicken brooder, extra large dog crates for isolation etc. I've been offered free eggs to hatch from friends etc. but turned them down (no broody hen or incubator). I am also afraid of getting started in something over my head. What to do with all of the chicks you hatch? What about shots? when I order from MyPet Chicken I ask them to do that, it seems like I should do that to mine to but how and is it necessary? Which breed is the best to hatch regularly, is there one a type in higher demand? I don't have a coop big enough to house forty extra chickens for the sake of incubating. Thanks as always for your advice.

  125. Pick me - pick me! We "thought" we were getting good mealworms for our flock ... only to find out that what we bought is only for wild birds. Now I'm paranoid that if we give them any, it will make them sick or do something to their eggs when they start laying (in another month or so - can't wait!!). We need the good stuff to give our chickies ... so please, pick me - pick me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  130. TheChickenChick8/22/13, 12:15 AM

Vickie: keep your chickens well secured at night with hardware cloth on all the windows and any opening leading into the coop. There will always be predators in the area, but there's no need to be afraid of a nighttime problem if the coop is secure.

  133. Would love to win the PredatorPee. My little flock of 5 has been terrorized by a fox. The horrid little thing has killed 3 of my sweet pullets and wounded 1 of my remaining 2. My children are heartbroken right now after the loss of their chickens that we raised from day 5 and I'm seriously reconsidering the free-ranging lifestyle, even though I know that's what they love. It's so hard losing them, especially since we have so few.

Maybe these treats will pacify my ornery Rhode Island Red that actually drew blood this week. I ended up smacking her with my plastic litter scoop that I had in my hand and that seems to have helped but maybe the treats would help us make up!!
