On a personal note, my Serama rooster died quite unexpectedly this week and the outpouring of kind words and gestures has been truly uplifting. Artist Kristen Beitler created this beautiful painting of Brutus for me, for which I am truly grateful. Thank you Kristen. ♥

    Kathy,
That painting is a sweet and thoughtful memorial, thanks for featuring it so I could see.

    Have you ever made cheese?

Today I'm linking up a recipe that uses some of the whey produced in cheese-making, Plum and Whey-soaked Oat Muffins. If you don't have jars of whey stuffed into the fridge and freezer like I do, buttermilk is a fine substitute.
I'm also sharing an Indian-spiced eggplant yogurt dip. For a pizza, as I'm making pizzas every Friday night here, I've got a pair of peach pizzas: Peach, Basil, and Brie, or Peach and Pepperoni.

    Thanks for hosting!

I found your site when searching for help with how to get a chicken to lay eggs in nesting boxes. Curtains, who would have thought? Great idea! Thanks for sharing your pictures and thoughts! It worked for Harriet for all her eggs and Henrietta is now laying in there too. Now we're on the egg watch for seven more to lay their first. I first found your info when Brutus was ill, my thoughts and prayers have been with you since. I am sorry for your loss but am happy that you had such a wonderful time with him and have so many great photographs. Thank you for sharing all that you do! (Also, Please enter my ladies and me in your contest to win.)

Hi Kathy. Questions about the herbs for the the coop. I wanted to make sure I understood it's use. Sprinkle it in the coop, but not in the nest boxes? Is it applied evenly for the hens to mix in or just a bit here and there? How often should it be reapplied?
    Thanks :) Deborah

    ReplyDelete
  145. TheChickenChick8/31/13, 7:20 PM

It can be put anywhere you like, Deborah. I put it in my nest boxes and on the floor of my coop. Sometimes I just put a bowl of it in my home because I like how it smells. Reapply whenever you wish.

Waiting to close on our house so we can get chickens and apply all your info and figure out all the things not to do the hard way when we forget what you've posted. After all that's how we'll truly remember and have stories to tell.

Love the painting of Brutus. I can't wait to see what hatches from the eggs you got delivered from LLamas and a whole lot of drama.
