Flock Focus Friday, 7/26/13

Quoting Mark Twain, "If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes." Temperatures this week ranged from triple digit highs to lows in the 50s, nutty even by New England standards.
My flock ordinarily free-ranges, but with temperatures in triple digits, I kept them confined to the run for because it's cooler than walking around in the sun. The run has everything they need: The Chicken Fountain serving up cold, fresh water, the mister providing 15-20°F lower temps, Grandpa's Feeder for convenient access to food and plenty of cool, sand for dust-bathing.
The flock enjoyed a new frozen treat, Scrambled EggPops, which didn't stick around long!
Blaze's recovery continues as twice daily I pack his wattle and earlobe with antibiotic-soaked gauze. Barbie was supervising this particular day. ☺

Blaze is responding beautifully to the treatments, gaining weight and is happy to be back in the flock.
Penny (Olive Egger) always looks surprised.
Brutus & Portia (Seramas) have discovered one another, Portia having hatched a few months later than Brutus.
Black Copper Marans masterpiece.
Brutus standing sentry at the mulch bed the hens have claimed as a dust bathing location.
Partridge Plymouth Rock.
Calista Flockheart (Tolbunt Polish Frizzle pullet)
Doc Brown (White Crested Black Polish hen). I interrupted her snacking on my lemon balm.
An Olympic hopeful in the next winter speed-skating races. (Olive Egger hen
I only found this spider web cool because it was unoccupied.

Kathy, are Brutus & Portia housed with your big chickens? I have 7 large chickens, 2 OEGs, & 1 Cochin that I got when they were all 3 days old so they live together in the coop. I also have 2 Seramas (Blaze & Pretty Girl) that are 7 or so months old (she's laying now), but they have never seen the other chickens.

First of all I apologize ahead of time if this is a repost since I wrote a nice long message but it was my first time and didn't realize I had to be logged in to comment. So if this is my second post...sorry =( lol.

We are relatively new to this whole chicken thing but have to admit we love it!! We have 11 girls that are about 4 months old and two boys that are about 4 months old and 1 year old. One of the girls presented us with her first eggs yesterday...we're so excited!! She left her first tiny one in her box in the coop. We think it was the same girl that managed to get herself into our screened in porch, into our breezeway then invaded our kitchen...lol!! One of our dogs was in a frenzy alerting us to this intruder so hubby nicely scooted her back outside. Shortly afterwards as hubby watched, she made her way back onto the breezeway where she settled herself onto an old chest we store out there. Hubby placed some shavings for her so she was more comfy and came back into the kitchen. A little while later he peeked out and she presented him with another egg, this one a bit bigger than the first! And the extra bonus was that both eggs were double-yolkers!! Thank you so much for posting such valuable information on your blog...we love it!! I just started following you earlier in the week on Facebook and I just signed up to follow you via email as well. Our babies would love to win the new giveaway water fountain!! =D

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love your blog, but every time I see someone promoting water nipples I cringe. I tried it with my chickens, and they clearly disliked it, so I discontinued the practice. My friend who also used it, couldn't figure out why her chickens stopped laying over the summer. Turned out they hated the water nipples so much that they only drank enough to keep themselves alive - not nearly enough to lay. Poor things were severely dehydrated!

  96. We are enjoying a bit of a break from the usual HAZY, HOT, HUMID that makes up weather in Virginia in the summer.I spent summers as a child at my Grampa's farm in RI. He didn't have air conditioning and we never felt hot. But I guess weather is getting hotter everywhere, and I'm getting less tolerant of the heat as I get older. I keep telling my husband that Maine looks good to me! My chickens seem much happier in the cooler weather, too. I hope to win one of your contests someday; you always have such great give-a-ways! That would solve my problem of the ducks messing up the chickens clean water.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Great photos! I'm glad the temps are a little better for all of us (on the East coast), down to Maryland, anyway! We lost one of our three month old chicks to the heat during one night. We were trying everything to keep them cool but I guess temps were just too high.
Saw your Facebook post question about the rooster attacks. They can be pretty scary. I had a really bad one a couple of months ago. I think everyone should know they are dangerous because of infection and should not be taken lightly. I was on intravenous antibiotics and crutches. Go get checked out - do not wait!
Love the waterer. Would be nice to have, of course! Still working on updating my coop. My new problem is having too many roosters - I think I have at least four from eleven chicks. I already have three adults. The one that attacked me is back with the original owner. Not sure what his fate will be....
Thanks for all of your advice. Hang in there and stay cool!

Reading your posts on FB is a daily pleasure: thank you so much. :) My girls have recently started laying: for water I use a couple of 5 gallon plastic water-ers from the feed store, but it is a daily chore to empty, clean (the girls do like to kick up a lot of dirt!) and re-fill. The bright side is that I get to talk with them while I'm there I have 6 young hens: Bertha (a Black Sex) is the loudest and bossiest and gives me her opinions freely. Prudence (Plymouth Rock) is just as forward, but much quieter and has a sweetness that I adore. Ophelia (Black Astrolope) is gorgeous as her black feathers glow an iridescent green and blue jewel tones in the sunshine. Then there are 3 Rhode Island Reds who haven't come into names yet, except for Hilda. Hilda is also known as 'Hysterical Hilda' as she gets into a panic over any little thing.... lololol
This morning they got an ear of corn for a breakfast treat: happy ladies!

I need one of these so bad. I have ducks and chickens that run together in my back yard and the ducks keep the water bowls dirty.

I love my Hen bag I bought a few weeks ago Kathy and I have received many compliments on it. I'm also looking forward to getting the Blaze and Hilda T-Shirt.

Keep up the good work Kathy, I really love your webpage.

We enjoy sitting in the evening watching them chase bugs. We are finding your blog to be very informative which will help us keep our flock happy and healthy. :)

Loving the UCONN cup! My brother is a UCONN track and field alum!

I have a story to share:

When you were on the hunt for vetericyn for Blaze, I kept thinking how familiar that name sounded to me. Couldn't pin point where I had heard of it. About a week after you found some and got Blaze stable, I found a bottle and quickly remembered I had used it for an eye infection my dog had. Had I found it sooner- I would have sent it your way!
Every now our hens have eye problems, so now I know what to use!
    xoxo
    Amy

Love your site/blog and all the pictures. You have so much knowledge to share, it's unending. I would love to win a chicken fountain, it would make my chores eaiser, I am so HAPPY Blaze is doing better, you are the best chicken mom/nurse. and Im glad you have a vet that cares. quick sad story: A friend I was talking to said most vets don't bother with chickens cause they are very cheap$$$ to replace. I was so upset. I would never know what to do if Blaze was my pet. This is very sad. Hope more vets step up and realize this is not true. They are our best buds. <3

We just hooked up our first Chicken Fountain this past week in one of my two chicken areas. And now I want one for the big coop! We are up to about 50 chickens now (as well as a duck and a goose, plus meat rabbits too!) So, yeah, I could really use another fountain! It's awesome! And if you start your new chicks using hanging water bottles (like the ones used for rabbits, rats, and the like) then using the fountain when the go out to the yard is a no brainer!! And I already follow you on FB and youtube!!
