Flock Focus Friday, 7/19/13

It was a very busy week, which began by our acquisition of the additional acreage necessary to garner farm status, securing our right to keep not only hens, but our roosters. I'd say that's something to crow about.

I continue working with the town and another attorney in preparing to present a regulation change to the town Zoning Commission to codify and legalize residential chicken-keeping for all residents of our town. We are, after all, a farm town- always have been, always will be.

Sunday and Monday were stressful as I found a visible infection underneath Blaze's wattle. It is unclear whether the lesion caused his illness three weeks ago or was a result of that illness. In any event, we changed veterinarians this time and are satisfied with his current treatment plan.

We experienced near record high temperatures all week with horrendously high humidity. All of the heat-beating tricks were pulled out of the hat to keep the birds comfortable.

The heat didn't seem to deter the ladies from contributing to the egg basket, although one could reasonably expect a significant drop in production in such high temperatures.
Olive Egger hen, keeping cool inside the shaded run.
Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) missed her buddy, Blaze as I kept him indoors to recuperate.

We are also in a heat wave here in Wisconsin. I have given my flock a wading pool but they were a little leery of it. I just kept giving them fresh cold drinking water all day long and they appreciated it. We have lots of woods and a good breeze so things went well enough. I will not complain about the heat though, after the winter we had!

  25. This is my entry for the Hogwash Soaps. Gotta be in it to win it right? Thx for the coping with the heat advice. I set up a wading pool for our girls but they just wanna drink out of it. They'll get the point sooner or later I guess. How does the saying go? You can lead a chicken to water but you can't make them swim?

  26. Not sure what happened to my previous post, but anyway.... I didn't realize you had a blog, but I am so glad that you do. I can enjoy chickens vicariously through you. One of these days, I will have my own chickens.

  33. It has been very hot here, and my girls are not producing much! Yikes....I am not used to so few eggs!!! I put frozen ice blocks int their water, mist them, moisten the earth in their runs, and make them frozen treats. So far, they are fine, just not producing many eggs.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  38. I used a bunch of your heat beating tricks this week! One thing I also did was bunggie cord frozen water bottles to the roosts at night. The girls sat on them and I felt like I was giving them some relief through those humid hot nights. It reached 100 degrees here in MA this week!

  49. Our rooster has decided that he likes being allowed to roam the yard and garden. This evening he paced in from of the gate and muttered to himself, while waiting for Davis to let them out. He sounded like a grumpy old man, in a residential facility, waiting from someone to let him outside for a walk.

Thank you for another opportunity to win something cool.
