ReplyDeleteNow back to plotting tomorrows Worm Safari event... :) The girls are getting

love it, thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs always, very important information about quarantining new members to the flock. I only had 3 Rhode Island Reds, and a hawk took care of two of them Nov '12 & Dec '12. I never had a coop, but brought each of the girls into our basement and sat them on the washer each night and put them out each morning. For almost two years I had not issues. The local backyard chicken group joked with me calling mine the safest chickens in town.
ReplyDeleteI look every so often on Craigslist for a deal on a coop and just happened to find the perfect one for me. It included 14 hens different breeds all ordered a year ago from My Pet Chicken. I went over to look at them and they are very well cared for, but the family is moving to California and can not take them with them driving across the country. If a rollback can fit into my yard they will be mine.
Very sad for Melissa and her family over losing their entire flock, but this information was something I needed to hear. I wanted to at least replace my two lost, but now I will be adding an entire flock to my lone Rhode Island Red, Maizy. I will continue to carry Maizy out to her run, alone even after the new Hens arrive with their own run, and Maizy and the new girls can watch each other from all the way across the yard. I will wait to introduce them 8 weeks, and hope that will be long enough.
Thank you, I always learn so much from you!!
Cheryl
