Eggshell Bouquets-A Symbolic Mother's Day Gift

DIY Eggshell Bouquets
On Mother's Day 2005, my life and perspective on life was changed forever when my first daughter was born. Not unlike other expectant parents, we eagerly anticipated Sophia's arrival; having suffered a crushing miscarriage the year before, I had gained a perspective on the fragility of life and an appreciation for the miracle of birth that I would not otherwise have had. That my daughter chose Mother's Day to make her entrance into the world is a poignant reminder to me of the true meaning of the holiday every year.
The Chicken Chick®- Mother's Day
May 8, 2005
Most of my life I had thought of Mother's Day as a day to honor mothers, but with Sophia's birth, I came to view it as a celebration of new life and the gift of children. We planted a tree in 2005 to commemorate Sophia's arrival and as a way to reflect on their growth together.

I suspect the symbolism of celebrating lives with other living things is at the heart of why we give our mothers flowers and plants on Mother's Day. It is in that spirit that I am making Eggshell Bouquets for Mother's Day this year. The egg itself, being a symbol of life and rebirth, I can think of no more appropriate a gift to give than an Eggshell Bouquet on Mother's Day.
The birthday girl and her tree.
EGGSHELL BOUQUETS
Materials needed:
Potting soil
egg carton
potted flowers
I use blown eggs to make the flower pots, but any empty shell will work as long as a hole is made on the bottom. A heavy knife crack the blown egg in half helps get a cleaner cut but jagged shells are pretty too. Small shards of shell line the bottom for drainage. A few teaspoons of potting soil are added into the eggshell.

Flowers are separated from the pack, retaining the root ball.

  6. Wonderful gift idea. I will have to wait till next year to use my own egg shells since my chicks are only 5 weeks old. :)
Not sure what's up for my Mothers Day celebration. Usually we do a waffle brunch but this year we have a graduation to attend...yes, on Mothers Day, but it is all good since it is for one of my our children graduating from Tech school with a degree in Law Enforcement. Exciting! He is an MP in the Army, so this fits him.:)
    HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

  14. Mother's day was always tinged with saddness for me. "Happy Mother's Day" rang hollow for those of us who had no children. Either becasue we couldnt have them or never found the right man that deserved our children. I especially avoided functions where Moms would be wearing a pretty corsage and honored for their role as Mother. Every woman should be honored. 8 years ago I met Joe. <3 I suffered an amazingly painful miscarriage and thought my chances of motherhood were over. 6 months later I was pregnant with my daughter Mary-Claire. I refused to tell anyone or even allow myself to be happy about it until the 20 week sonogram where I saw my perfect little girl. I cried and cried. Unbelieving. But she was born on May 30th 2007 and it was the greatest day of my life. I now have an even deeper bond with my own mother whom I've gotten to have a relationship with after being apart for years. She wasnt there for me when I lost my first baby. But we're close now and I wouldnt have it any other way :) My daughter (almost 5 now) and I are baking mom a "Thunder cake" (her favorite) and helping her plant her garden. INCLUDING the little eggshell viola plants that we started last month. I still need to honor all the "earth mothers" who dont have their own children (yet) and many are honored "Aunts" for Mary-Claire <3. Happy Mothers Day to all and kudos on a wonderful blog :)

My first mothers day was when I was 19, out in the world on my own with my baby boy, I still remember a deep feeling of pride that i felt as i woke up that morning, and hugged my little guy on my first mothers day. My first born son will always be dear to me, he is what made me mom, he is who showed me how important someone other then myself was to the world... He made me who I am today, and I will always love him for those things.... that is what mothers day means to me.

  39. Such a cute idea for the egg shells. For this Mothers Day we will go out to eat with my 3 grown children. I became a mother at the age of 16, and I might have done alot of things differently, but the result is that I have 3 beautiful children. They are kind and respectful, and just awesome human beings. Every year I buy 2 Mothers Day cards, but this year I will just be buying one, as I lost my mother this past July. But I feel her with me every day.
